Arlene Farge is a French historian and Director of Research in Modern History, and specialized in 18th century France social history. She mainly took the use of police and legal records to uncover the unheard voices of everyday people during and after the French Revolution. In this novella The Allure of the Archives written by Arlene Farge Arlette, she explores the archives in the French National Archives, the Library of the Arsenal and the National Library. These archives were taken from eighteen century, France, the missing key and some type of evidence which will later shed some light in her research. She untangled the two-hundred-year-old judicial records from the Archives of the Bastille. She was fascinated by the lack of portrayal provided by the lives of the poor in pre-Revolutionary France, especially women. She was somehow seduced by the old manuscripts and also uncovered hidden secrets of the past. She asserts, the goal is not to make earth shaking discoveries, but to learn that for an alert historian, the archives can provide “a vantage point from which she can bring to light new forms of knowledge.” The task of research is therefore more than a neutral demand for “access” or “information.” "... the archive is like a forest without clearings, but by inhabiting it for a long time, your eyes become accustomed to the dark, and you can make out the outlines of the trees." Identity is defined by actions. Actions that are taken out of the ordinary are what others would call courageous and noteworthy. These actions surpass the call of duty and propel their status from normalcy to their true individuality. Insane, crazy, abnormal, indifferent, it is the experiences of these persons who define them.
