In the article "In the Strawberry Fields", Eric Schlosser uses an abundance of rhetorical strategies to influence the audience. "In the Strawberry Fields" is honest and gets to the point of the illegal immigrants working. His in depth description of the migratory workforce in California proves how farmers who pick strawberries for a living are the lowest-paid, and hardest working, which makes it an unfavorable job amongst farmers. The author uses eloquent details to get the message across that California has also become one of the most dependent states to have the availability of cheap labor. Florence Kelly was a United States social worker who advocated for child labor laws and the improved working conditions for women throughout the early 1900s. During a speech to the National American Woman Suffrage Association Kelly skillfully employed the rhetorical strategies of imagery, pathos, and anecdote in order to sufficiently inform her listeners of the horrendous working conditions that many children were forced to endure. Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages represents the Twenty-Second district of New York. The Twenty-Second district includes the areas of Elmont, North Valley Stream, Valley Stream, South Valley Stream, North Woodmere, Floral Park, South Floral Park, Bellrose Terrace, Stewart Manor, and parts of Franklin Square. The district heavily weighs more on the democratic side, however, there is a balance of the number of voters who do come out and vote. The voters that are independent are not very significant.
In “The Managed Hand”, author Miliann Kang, brings us into the world of the nail salons of New York in an attempt to show us the coming together of multiple layers of intersectionality, gender, class, race and immigration. Kang brings to light a new service labor (body labor), an insight into the growing Korean immigrant community, the topic of racialized and gendered stereotyping as well as the inequality between women of different races and social status. Through this reading, we see that Kang works from the notion of Hochschild’s emotional labor; Kang takes it a step further and introduces body labor. Body labor is the designated commercialized exchange in which service workers attend to the physical comfort and appearance of the customers
In her essay “Serving in Florida” Barbara Ehrenreich states that the minimum wage is not enough to support a person. The evidence that she uses is very convincing for me she mentions various examples of how hard she had to work, in order to afford for her rent. Ehrenreich mentions that she had to work two jobs one as a waitress and the other one as housekeeping in the essay she describes how hard it was to run from one job and not being regarded with anything. I believe that the author wants to make the audience to analyze and make conscious about the situation and the world where we lived
He enlists in detail how racial discrimination in the Latin American workforce during the export boom allowed white Europeans to come to the America’s and obtain better jobs than the natives of the region. The goal was to push out the Latin American workers and pull in pure bred white Europeans. Even for the lower paid jobs, employers preferred white workers over colored workers due to this crude, unworthy stigma that was perceived through the former slave revolts. Society developed stereotypes that depicted Afro-Latin Americans as lazy and uneducated and white Europeans has diligent, more educated beings. This led to a racialized employee preference in the workforce.
This shows some racial institutionalism within the company. The company also preferred workers from Poland because they came from the poorest regions in Europe and were most desperate for work. A worker not being able to speak English and being poor makes it easy for the company to take advantage of the individual and be able to put them in job positions that they want them to have. Young said that a black worker could keep a job at Inland if he learned the equipment and did whatever the foreman asked.

In 1941, Barbara Ehrenreich was born in Butte, Montana, a blue-collar mining town where her father used to work before he earned a degree in the Butte School of Mines and moved the family. Ehrenreich became a part of a middle-class family and attended Rockefeller University where she graduated with a doctorate in biology. However, throughout the years she became more involved with politics, such as advocating for the women’s health movement in the 1970’s and wrote Witches, Midwives, and Nurses: A History of Women Healers. One of the best-selling authors, Barbara Ehrenreich, in her narrative essay, “Serving in Florida,” describes her personal experience working in a local restaurant called Jerry’s. The belief of respect is important that managers, supervisors, employees at the organization also reflect organization’s culture and manner. I realized that respect others is an effective way to improve my own quality and it requires me to respect others’ achievement and custom. Therefore, respect is my basic quality and I have to be patient with each employee although I am a leader in the future career. 4.2 Examining Political, Cultural and Social Realities Power is defined as a capacity that the behavior of A has to be affected and act according to B’s wishes (Robbins et al., 2010).
There are many reasons why respect is the key to success. Throughout our lives, we will work with many people. Whether we like them or not, we still need to respect them in order to complete the assignment. For example, a teacher pairs me up with people I dislike. Even though I dislike them, I still have to work with them and treat their ideas and opinions with respect.
