“Barrington Irving, Pilot and educator” by National Geographic is a nonfiction article about Barrington Irving and his story about becoming a pilot and educator. Barrington grew up in the hood, so when he realized his dream was to become a pilot and fly around the world, he stopped at nothing to get there. After turning down his full scholarship for football, getting his pilot's license at 19, and getting donated parts to build his own airplane, he set off. He became the first African American to fly around the world solo. Barrington sets off to share his knowledge and educate young teens and kids. According to the text the author states “I had no money, but I was determined to give back with my time, knowledge, and experience.” “Ivring’s nonprofit organization, Experience Aviation, aims to boost the numbers of youth in aviation and other science- and math-related careers.” (par. 6 and 7). We can see after he decided to follow his passion of flying he has decided to give back and help other kids who were just like him, who otherwise may never have had a chance of a career. Making a nonprofit organization is pretty impressive considering he didn't have much money, but he did because of the passion he had for helping kids who were once like him. Additionally “We’ve had one young lady receive a full scholarship to Duke University as a math major, and several young men and now pilots, engineers, and aircraft mechanics.” Barrington’s nonprofit organization Is indeed successful and helping high schoolers in the hood like never before.
