Behind the Blue and Gray BY:Aayush Agrawal In the book,Behind the Blue and Gray, Delia Ray claims that life during the war was gruesomely difficult. Fighting and surviving was a lethal occupation. It didn’t matter what side you were on. Ray describes that some struggles during the war were camp life, rations of food, medical treatment, nature, worries about family, punishments, and life after the war. The book provides evidence to a soldiers hardships.
In “Between Shades of Gray” by Ruta Sepetys, the prisoners would have easier survived if they signed the NKVD papers. If they signed the papers they would have been able to send letters, they would’ve been treated better by the NKVD officers, and they would’ve never been held to a twenty-five year sentence hard work labor sentence. With these rights they would be stronger. They would be able to communicate with others and they would be able to trade to get what they needed. They would’ve been better off with signing.
In Night the families were split up and in Between Shades of Gray they were able to stay together. Also in Night the officers killed majority of them and in Between Shades of Gray the NKVD didn’t really kill them. Now there was also many similarities between Night and Between Shades of Gray. They were both working long hours for little food which caused many people to die of malnourishment.
In the book Unbroken During the war people lost so many things that they loved or cherished. The topic is about what people lost during the war in the book unbroken. In the book unbroken POWS lost family belongings and they lost their dignity. POWS lost their dignity during the war when they were captured and put into camps. One of the characters named Louie Zamperini was beaten everyday and picked on by guards.
Many people have learned about the Holocaust throughout the years, but learning about it from a primary source is a whole different experience. A scary journey that turned out to be the Holocaust has been told by two individuals that survived. These two stories tell the reader what life was like and what they went through. Even though the conditions were terrible, both Eli and Lina were able to survive and break away through fear, horrendous experiences, and hope that lead them to surviving and leaving people they cared about behind.
In Between Shades of Gray, the author illustrates the theme of unity throughout the book, while in Night, the author demonstrates the theme of self-preservation. For example, in Between Shades of Gray, as Christmas approaches, Lina describes, "We gathered each night to hear about someone’s holiday celebration. We grew to know each other through our longings and cherished memories. Mother insisted that we invite the grouchy woman to our meetings. She said that just because she had signed didn’t mean that she wasn’t homesick" (Sepetys, 201).
The conditions were expressed very negative and unjust for they’d work for absolutely any wage. Men, women, boys, and girls, were put to work in harsh conditions that are treated as slaves doc 1. Living conditions are very alike to those depicted in doc 4 where immigrants were staying. They are very humble and they dress very cheaply and eat rice from China while sleeping 20 in a room treated very poorly. They used them to find success in business’s for they’d work continuously and would pay them whatever they wished.

The book Between Shades of Gray has three main characters: Lina, Jonas, and Andrius. All three characters go through that hardship, however, it is their characteristics of bravery, strength, and tenacity that get them through this difficult time. Ruta Sepetys wrote a New Yorks best seller novel called ¨Between Shades of Gray¨. In this historical fiction novel a family is taken from their homes during the Holocaust and has to endure many challenges. One of the main characters is a 16 year old girl named Lina whoś bravery, hope, and faith can be seen throughout the novel. In the novel ¨Between Shades of Gray¨ Sepetys creates two main theme, that hope can be found where there is despair and where there is fear there is faith. One theme that can be seen throughout the novel “Between Shades of Gray¨ is that hope can be found where there is despair.
The novel, Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepety has becomes one of the best book I have ever read. In know that can be a cliché statement to make but the novel is truly exquisite. The author put the reader on a page-turning journey through her juicy plot, her unique writing style, and the historical event added to the book. The novel Between Shades of Gray will soon be a classic all will get to know.

The protagonist of the book Between Shades of Gray, Lina, changed in many different ways by the time that the book was finished. She was convinced that she was worth less than an animal, she was forced by the Secret Soviets to work, and was given very little food, she found out the reason why she was forced into these work camps. These three things impacted Lina and changed her. She would never be the same thanks to these daunting moments in her life. Growing up, Lina lived a privileged life.

Courage is something a lot of people have like Charles Lindbergh first nonstop flight NY to Paris, Sir Edmund Hillary climbing Mount Everest ,and firefighters and police who tried to save lives on 9/11 and my father George Quarranttey Sr. So one day had a been walking home from school and had a bully coming his way and said give me your money. He said “ No” than he yelled at him again “Gimmie(that is how he said it) your money now!!!”
