The memoir depicts the struggle of Evelio Grillo growing up in Ybor city which is now a part of Tampa Florida. In the memoir, Evelio captures the different aspects of a black Cuban life in Ybor City but mainly addresses the issue of racial separation of the white Cubans vs the black Cubans.
