Bless Me, Ultima is a fiction novel written by Rudolfo Anaya in which his young protagonist, Antonio Márez y Luna, tells the story of his coming-of-age with the guidance of his curandera, mentor, and protector, Ultima. The setting takes place in Guadalupe, New Mexico in the 1940s. The novel reflects Chicano culture of the 1940s in the Pecos Valley New Mexico. The novel is regarded as part of the emerging genre of cultural novels that explore the development of self and ethnic identity in a world of racism and antagonistic ethnic relations. Bless Me, Ultima is a story about the maturation of a young Mexican-American boy, Antonio M’arez, struggling with many questions about his destiny, life and death, and good and evil. Antonio is torn between three destinies. His mother wants him to become a priest while his father wants him to explore and be free. He sees Antonio and starts yelling and cursing at him while Antonio makes a holy cross with his fingers to keep away the evil, Tenorio tells Antonio his second daughter is dying and blames Ultima due to her cure of the curse of Lucas therefore he wants to murder her. Antonio felt scared but stood up for Ultima remembering how his dad and Ultima stood up to Tenorio and he said that he would not let him hurt Ultima. Tenorio turns and disappears in dust making Antonio believe he put a spell on him. Antonio starts running home to let Ultima know what happen and if he has been cursed. When Antonio gets to Ultima he tells her what happened and Ultima was not worried because he had not touched Antonio and she did not feel any threat from Tenorio because he had no manly strength.
