Tracey Lindberg’s novel Birdie is narratively constructed in a contorting and poetic manner yet illustrates the seriousness of violence experience by Indigenous females. The novel is about a young Cree woman Bernice Meetoos (Birdie) recalling her devasting past and visionary journey to places she has lived and the search for home and family. Lindberg captures Bernice’s internal therapeutic journey to recover from childhood traumas of incest, sexual abuse, and social dysfunctions. She also presents Bernice’s self-determination to achieve a standard of good health and well-being. The narrative presents Bernice for the most part lying in bed and reflecting on her dark life in the form of dreams.
The diction the author uses is a relatively complicated one using long sentences and words to set the tone. An example of this is when the author writes “ For a motionless instant he saw himself externally--bent practically double, balanced on this narrow ledge, nearly half his body projecting out above the street far below--and he began to tremble violently, panic flaring through his mind and muscles, and he felt the blood rush from the surface of his skin” This is the diction the author uses the entire story this diction which is a complicatedly simple way of writing that really explains the movements and thoughts of the main character which is essential in a good storyline or any movie or tv show. The best part of the story is the attention to details that the author uses throughout his entire story. The author throws in small details that didn’t need to be in the story but, were included anyways and made the story better overall.

In his short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” author Hames Hurst uses birds as a symbol for Doodle’s current emotions by showing Doodle’s fear of being left alone and not being protected. Doodle, the narrator's brother, was born with a rare disease; however, instead of dying as a baby he ended up growing up with his family. Nevertheless, Doodle was weak and fragile and the use of birds as symbols helps us understand Doodle’s current emotions.

Rosa Parks refused to give her seat up on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama; Malala Yousafzai defied threats from the Taliban to campaign for education; Mother Teresa dedicated her life to serving the poor. All of these people have something in common- they all have shown acts of heroism and courage. In Alvarez’s novel the Time of the Butterflies, the Mirabal sisters all demonstrate acts of courage equal to those stated above. Although all of the sisters show courage, it is Minerva, who demonstrates the greatest amount of courage. Minerva demonstrates exceptional courage throughout the story, including at the Discovery Day dance when she stood up to Trujillo, and while imprisoned and never gave up hope.
The ratio of birds to humans is approximately 300 to 7, so if humans were attacked by a mass of birds, there’s a very slim possibility of survival, if any possibility. This is the base of the plot of Daphne du Maurier’s short story, The Birds (1952), and Alfred Hitchcock’s movie adaptation of the same name, which came out in 1963. While there are similarities between them, such as the conflict and the theme, there are also differences, such as the characters and the setting. This essay will be covering the similarities and the differences between the short story and the film. There are a few similarities between the short story and the movie, like the conflict and the theme.
When reading a novel, readers do not often realize that many authors use the same types of characters and symbols. Applying a literary lens to a novels can help readers better understand why a novel was written. A literary theory is, “A term for analyzing, classifying, defining, interpreting, and evaluating literature” (Davidson). When observing a piece of literature with an Archetypal lens analysts can identify these patterns. According to Literary Devices, “In literature, an archetype is a typical character, an action, or a situation that seems to represent universal patterns of human nature” (literarydevices).
Adventure and desire are common qualities in humans and Sarah Orne Jewett’s excerpt from “A White Heron” is no different. The heroine, Sylvia, a “small and silly” girl, is determined to do whatever it takes to know what can be seen from the highest point near her home. Jewett uses literary elements such as diction, imagery, and narrative pace to dramatize this “gray-eyed child” on her remarkable adventure. Word choice and imagery are necessary elements to put the reader in the mind of Sylvia as she embarks on her treacherous climb to the top of the world. Jewett is picturesque when describing Sylvia’s journey to the tip of one unconquered pine tree.
This passage from “A white Heron”, by Sarah Orne Jewett, details a short yet epic journey of a young girl, and it is done in an entertaining way. Jewett immediately familiarizes us with our protagonist, Sylvia, in the first paragraph, and our antagonist: the tree. However, this is a bit more creative, as the tree stands not only as an opponent, but as a surmountable object that can strengthen and inspire Sylvia as she climbs it. This “old pine” is described as massive, to the point where it, “towered above them all and made a landmark for sea and shore miles and miles away.” (Line 8).
In the Eagle Poem, Joy Harjo uses repeated imagery of circles to explore how one’s search for identity and meaning continues throughout his or her life. She is explaining how a person must pray to find them self and he or she truly is. She explains this by starting the poem by saying how, “to pray you open your whole self, to sky, to earth, to sun, to moon… and know there is more.” Here, she is showing that to find who you are as a person, you must search high and low and continue searching through the circle of motion, which is just a symbol for life.
Exigence is all around us in daily life, whether it be politics, the media, or even science. Exigence tends to happen during every crisis in today’s world, shining light on issues that need to be seen. William Goulding has commenced a call to action with this book, making all the readers informed on his philosophy. In “Lord of the Flies”, by William Goulding, we see that a group of boys have crash landed on an island. The boys will begin to form a civilized group within themselves, only in order to break out into disarray.
A Literary Analysis: “The Raven” - Edgar Allen Poe “Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore—Tell me what thy/lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!”/Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.” (“Poe” line 46-48) Out of all of Edgar Allen Poe works, “The Raven, a beautifully written poem with a depressing story, is possibly the best because of it’s popularity, but also for it’s power of making the reader feel and understand what is happening to the character.
Let’s start by looking at the protagonist of the poem who illustrates a lot of psychoanalytical issues in his ordeal with the raven. From the start of the poem to the end, the reader can recognize and identify many defenses. Some of them include selective memory, selective deception, selective perception, denial and displacement especially towards the end. The most significant issue presented in the poem is the fear of being abandoned. Let me delve deeper into the subject.
Birds are gifted with the extraordinary ability to fly. Their wings propel them above the ground and over people below. They are able to view the world from an angle that no one else gets to see. This is what makes birds and wings such powerful symbols in literature. These symbols characterize characters, move the plot and develop one more of the book’s ideas.
“Caged Bird” written by Maya Angelou in 1968 announces to the world her frustration of racial inequality and the longing for freedom. She seeks to create sentiment in the reader toward the caged bird plight, and draw compassion for the imprisoned creature. (Davis) Angelou was born as “Marguerite Annie Johnson on April 4, 1928 in St Louis, Missouri”. “Caged Bird” was first published in the collection Shaker, Why Don’t You Sing? 1983.
