In the article “Can We End the Division”, written by the author Giuseppe Clemente, he writes although the nation may be a whole, the nation is constantly being divided among man. In the nation, the motto E pluribus unum may have been the motto that allowed the nation to be a whole, as seen on American currency and the Great Seal of the United States, but in politics, religion, and even sports causes people to divide amongst one another. Consistent through this article, Clemente would use techniques such as an appeal to emotion and logic to strengthen the persuasiveness of his argument. Although the nation’s motto may mean “one from many,” two of the greatest and earliest presidential figures were insulting each other in becoming president, and stating ideas that ruined the other’s credibility from things that did not matter as a political figure. This showed although the two were competing for politics, they were dividing each other even further by going to their personal life and insulting. Lastly as seen in society, “An honest disagreement about principles or issues seems to be increasingly hard to find. Instead, what we have are ‘facts’ that are nothing more than lies that fit with preconceived prejudices” (Clemente 6). With the Jefferson versus Adams case as an example to fit the above statement, this is showing that a lot of what we believe is lies than truths in hopes of allowing the public to take a stance. This would allow the people to be separated not only just in such politics but in many other topics as well, such as religion, making groups of separate belief instead of one whole nation.
