Dear Pepper: How the Cookie Crumbles While inventions and creations are beginning to cost more money, people get the idea that they deserve stuff for free rather than paying the price. Regarding stores, small businesses, or even food stands, people ask for free items rather than financially supporting them. In Liana Finck’s satirical cartoon, “Dear Pepper: How the Cookie Crumbles,” the author expresses her criticism and argues that she loves to make and sell cookies, but it is very irritating when people ask for free cookies because she works so hard to make them. This evidence leads right back to support the argument in which she is greatly irritated by these events. This proves how bad she feels because she loves to give out cookies and be generous, but her hard work should not be complimentary. When talking to another person about this situation, they use sarcasm, mentioning that they should give out free cookies to people, but then says she is kidding. She mentions, “…one does not have to give cookies to everyone. Except of course to one’s sister, and one’s best friend, one’s librarian… I’m kidding…the trick is to act on this knowledge-and to do so graciously” (Finck 8). Using sarcasm, the lady mentions that the author should give cookies out for free but then counters by saying that she should not have to. This demonstrates how irritated the author is by others’ requests for free cookies, to the point where she has to ask others if it is all right if she does not comply with their requests.
