We talk about genre as non-fiction, fiction or fantasy but we don’t realize that they can also be emails, texts or social media posts. These are types of writing no one associates genre with but happen to fall into that defintion. My controlling purpose of this essay was “Usually your literate identity is most shown through the genres you write.” I used this as my controlling purpose because it gives the readers an idea as to what the essay will be about. I then start to elaborate and try to explain the reasoning for my definition on genre and how I came across it. I used information from multiple assignments to come up with this definition, “Genre is a category that is placed on music, books and films.” I used this definition because I believe it's the most impactful towards my controlling purpose and the term genre. After using my own knowledge to come up with a definition I decide to use a quote from Debra Brandt to add more support and depth into my essay. I then move onto another quote but this time from Bazerman, “Recognizable, self-reinforcing forms of communication emerge as genres.” I use this quote to explain to the reader that
