Etheridge Knight “Hard Rock Returns to Prison from the Hospital for the Criminal Insane” is about a man who stands against the workers of the jail. Hard Rock also represents how people struggle with police authority. The prisoner felt like Hard Rock saved them from a lot while in prison. The line “He had been our Destroyer, the doer of things” (504) talks about how Hard Rock destroyed the people for the prisoners. Hard Rock does things that the other prisoners would not imagine doing because of his reputation o f being violent.
The bonds are between the two main characters, Brian Taylor and Miguel Zavala, the Los Angeles Police Department, and Miguel and Bloods gang member, Tre. This is the first encounter and time Rodriguez and his father exchanged words that night. The reader can infer that his father is still upset about him being fluent in English. Rodriguez also notices the state his father is in and that he is getting old and that his mother looks very sad.
In the words of Steve Lopez, “You're only as good or bad as your latest attempt to make some connection with the world.” The novel, The Soloist, by Steve Lopez is an insight to Lopez’s time helping and connecting with Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless schizophrenic. When Lopez meets Nathaniel he is awed by his musical talent and soon discovers he once attended Julliard, a prestigious school of performing arts. Lopez’s story was transformed into a film produced in 2008. Lopez’s character in the book and film share similarities and differences in his personal life, attitude towards Nathaniel, and struggles that contribute to the overall theme of the novel.
Soul on Ice by Eldridge Cleaver is a collection of writings and correspondence with his attorney Beverly Axelrod from his time in the Folsom State Prison in California in 1965. Eldridge Cleaver was convicted of drug crimes and then convicted again later after he committed a series of rapes against black and white women. Within Soul on Ice, Eldridge Cleaver details his pursuit of self-discovery and the pursuit of knowledge and new ideologies within the prison system. In addition, Cleaver explores the social system and race relations of black and white people during the Civil Rights Movement. Cleaver renounces his actions as rapist and converts to a Malcom X follower and later a Marxist revolutionary.

Friendship is a wonderful yet confusing thing. This concept is brilliantly displayed in Chaim Potok’s The Chosen. In the book, the main character, Reuven, and Danny Saunders become friends through an interesting turn of events during a baseball game, the short version being that Danny ended up putting Reuven in the hospital with a baseball in the eye. After Reuven gets over some feelings of bitterness towards Danny, the two grow to be great friends. There are many difficulties when it comes to friendship, but the beauty of a good friendship is that good friends can power through them.
2) This extract is found in “The White Album” written by Joan Didion, who is the creator of many significant different literature pieces, both novels and essays. “The White Album” was published in 1979, and is the first and longest essay in the book. In this essay Joan Didion essentially uses a women as a connecting thread to describe what was happening in America at that time. I believe that the woman may even be herself to a certain extent, trying to externalize all her thoughts. What is perceived from the essay is that Didion was submerged into the focus of some big events that were happening in that year, not only as a journalist but also as a bystander and a normal Californian.
Juan Solis Writing Style in Fahrenheit 451. Ray Bradbury’s style in Fahrenheit 451 is unique, and it helps add to the story’s atmosphere and tone. Bradbury structures his sentences in such a way that it makes the described situation feel heavier, and more meaningful. His vocabulary adds a rich sense of imagery, this is also combined with his use of figurative language throughout, compliments it further. These things come together to form a type of style that’s powerful, bizarre, and even confusing at times.
Philip K. Dick’s successful short story The Minority Report construes a post-crime system called Precrime. Precrime police officers prevent homicides with the aid of precog mutants; precrime methodology has boldly and successfully abolished the post-crime system of jails and fines. Mutants: Mike, Donna, and Jerry’s every utterance and syllables were analyzed, compared, and reassembled in form of visual symbols, transcribed on punch cards, then ejected into various coded slots. For example, in her analysis of Isak Dinesen’s “The Blank Page” Susan Gubar adopts the metaphor of “the blank page” to stress how women’s history silenced by the patriarchy can be subversive. “The Blank Page” is narrated on a wedding night where the stained sheets of princesses are displayed with their names to prove their virginity.
