Edward Scissorhands is the wonderful and thrilling story of a naive, artificial man who lives alone at the top of mountain until a well-meaning Avon saleslady shows up at his door, realizes he lives alone, and brings him home to her quirky, robotic neighborhood. Edward longs to belong to a family, and he gets his wish when the Boggs take him in. Almost immediately, Edward develops a connection to and feelings for the Boggs’ teenage daughter, Kim. Kim’s boyfriend, Jim, is not a fan of Edward, and Edward’s place in the Boggs family and in the town is jeopardized when Jim and Kim convince Edward to do something extraordinary. Edward speaks very little throughout the film, so a lot of the story depends heavily on Elfman’s ability to capture emotions through music. He does this beautifully throughout the film. For example, during the scene in which Peg, the matriarch of the Boggs family, meets Edward, we see her emotions oscillate between wonder at the natural sculptures in the garden to her terror at glimpsing a shadowed Edward in the corner of the upstairs room. Just as Edward arises in what feels as if it will be a gruesome murder scene in a horror film, Edward whispers the words, “Don’t go,” and the music suddenly softens and creates an atmosphere of melancholy around the character. Besides using music to the tell the story, Burton also plays with color to great effect. Other actors were up for the part, including Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks. It’s difficult to imagine either of these actors being able to portray the same kind of innocent longing that Depp captures in his portrayal of Edward. Winona Ryder matches Depp’s naivete in the character of Kim, who always seems to know a little more about the world than Edward, but wishes she didn’t. The two have excellent chemistry on screen, and are believable as two star-crossed
