Graff teaches Ender independence and manipulation through Graff’s example and the way he treats him. When Graff and General Pace were talking, Pace told Graff he was pushing Ender too hard, and Graff admits to this. Graff claims “Obviously. But the connection is there. Ender Wiggin must believe that no matter what happens, no adult will ever, ever step in to help him in anyway. He must believe, to the core of his soul, that he can only do what he and the other children work out for themselves. If he does not believe that, then he will never reach the peak of his abilities.” (239-240). Graff isolates Ender, so Ender believes that he has to do everything on his own and to teach Ender that he does not need anybody because he has himself. Not only does Graff manipulate Ender to go to battle school, but all throughout school he gets Ender to do things that Ender didn't know about. After they talked, Ender realized the buggers are just like humans. They just want to live and not have to fight anymore. Ender stated to the Hive Queen “If you could make them feel as you make me feel, then perhaps they could forgive you.”(365). Ender wants to now show people that the buggers are not bad and if they can forgive humans for killing their whole species, then humans should be able to forgive them as well. Another thing Ender learned from the Hive Queen was compassion. When Ender fist meets the HIve Queen he almost starts to cry. He feels bad for killing the buggers, even though they probably would have killed all the humans. Ender thinks “there flashed through his mind a dozen images of human beings being killed by buggers, but with the image came a grief so powerful he could not bear it, and he wept her tears for them.”(365). Ender empathizes with a species he doesn't even know because he knows what he did to them unknowingly was so terrible. Ender become the Speaker For the Dead to bring awareness for the buggers. In the end, the Hive Queen shows him that forgiveness and compassion can be shown
