American societal standards and expectations set a diminishing mood for hopeful immigrants. In Ocean Vuong’s poem “Someday I’ll Love Ocean Vuong”, Vuong reflects his journey of self-love and self-acceptance upon immigrating to America. In order to find oneself, one must lose themselves first. In Vuong’s poem, the speaker highlights “& remember, loneliness is still time spent with the world.” (Vuong, 29-31) Many individuals mistake loneliness as disadvantageous towards achieving their goals. Rather than perceiving it as isolation or disconnection from an engaged world, individuals should recognize it as crucial engagement with the surrounding world. Having a deeper connection with surrounding factors, living or nonliving, provides a stronger sense of belonging than any other person could provide another. A connection and uplifting relationship with existence leads to a remarkable self-discovery. This shift in perspective revitalizes an exploration of significant solitude towards appreciation of one’s place in the world. This will lead to a transformative experience to which the speaker asserts “I swear you will wake– and mistake these walls for skin.” (lines 39-41) This awakening underscores certainty for self acceptance and finding one’s place in society from a positive standpoint. Once one has gained a connection with their boundaries, they will find that their personal physical boundaries will have no correlation to any external and uncontrollable environment one finds themselves in.
