Although much of Gary Shteyngart’s “Super Sad True Love Story revolves around the relationship between Lenny and Eunice, there is a clear, overarching theme. Lenny talks about the applicants for the service consisting of high net worth individuals. A service similar to this will generate a massive amount of money once it is successful, and when money calls, the government always answers. This means that there is no way that a corporation will be allowed to acquire all of the profits from the service because the government will step-in and regulate the process. What will not change is the acceptance of applications from high net worth individuals. As vulgar as it sounds, the government will not permit low net worth individuals to extend their lives because as stated prior, low net worth individuals do not stand to provide wealth to the economy. Therefore, if a person is struggling through poverty in the future, despite the option of life extension, they will not be granted that privilege. It was not until I read the passage at the top of the paper that I realized that Gary Shteyngart’s “Super Sad True Love Story” provides a framework for the future of the United States’ civilization. Tyranny has happened elsewhere, so what excuses the United States from such events? There are three key points in which Shteyngart predicts future possibilities in America; nuclear war between the U.S. and China, Tyranny, and the exemption of low net worth individuals’ eligibility to receive life
