No matter who someone's hero is one thing stays the same. A hero is someone that has strived to help out of their own will. Anyone could be a hero. However not everyone is a hero. Being a hero takes courage.
What makes someone a hero? Most people would say someone who saves the day or has super powers or even characters in books are heroes. Antigone is a young woman in the play Antigone by Sophocles, Antigone is considered a hero by many for giving up her life for her brother and going against the law in 44 B.C. While Terry Malloy is considered a hero in the movie On the Waterfront for also going against rules. Malloy would be considered a rough kid who got into a bad situation with a group of mugs while working on the dock, not only does he save the day for himself but for others that are working on the docks as well. Antigone and Terry both go against rules for what they believe is right and become heroes.
A hero is someone who puts others before themselves. Heroic acts can range from small gestures or actions such as saving countless lives. Heroes are known for their outstanding achievements and selflessness. Welles Crowther was a hero because he put other people's lives ahead of his own and sacrificed his life for others.. As Welles was growing up, he had an interest in helping people.
The way we face difficult situations defines who we are as a person, sometimes these situations provide opportunities for us to be heros. According to Grant Wiggins’s definition of a hero, by the end of the novel he becomes a hero himself. He states, “A hero is someone who does something for other people. He does something that other men don’t and can't do. He is different from other men.
But a hero isn’t just defined by their superpowers or what book they come from, it’s the choice to do the right thing even if it means getting hurt in the process. Heroes don’t have to be from a book or a movie franchise. Heroes can be ordinary people thrust into impossible situations or one who sticks their neck out to save yours. Take the nameless French girl from Elie Wiesel’s Night for instance. She slipped him a small piece of bread after Elie got beat by Idek, a guard.
To be considered a hero a person must do a courageous act or multiple acts for the purpose of helping another. In the story “Anthem” by Ayn Rand our main character, Equality 7-2521 would be considered a hero because of his actions and the journey he goes on. In the story he wants to bring the people his invention the light bulb. Even though they reject it he still takes a huge risk to try and change the city for the better. Another example would be by the end of the book equality has figured out the true evil of the earth and he seeks to bring it down.
“A true hero isn’t measured by the size of their strength, but by the strength of their heart.” A hero is a person that does something to help or they can also save someone 's life. One example of, being a hero is Darry because he takes care of Ponyboy and Sodapop. Another example, of being a hero is Johnny when he saved Ponyboy and the little kids. A further example, of being a hero is Ponyboy when he also saved the little kid’s life and when he wanted to take the blame for killing Bob.
Was Andrew Carnegie a Hero During the late 19th century, Andrew Carnegie made an investment in the steel industry that profited into a fortune, but Carnegie’s earlier life didn’t include wealth. In fact, his family immigrated from Scotland to America in the mid 1800s in search for opportunities. After working tirelessly for many years, Andrew Carnegie became one of the most successful businessmen and philanthropists of all time. Although he accomplished many achievements in the Industry there are underlying reasons indicating that Carnegie was not a hero, such as, his wealth management, inconsiderate work conditions, and hypocrisy.
Anyone can be a hero. For instance, Robert Bentz was being selfless when he put himself between a driver of a stolen car and Bentz’ son. “In the split second of seeing the car coming straight at [his son] Roudy, Bentz cranked his steering wheel as hard as possible. That put him between the oncoming car and his son.” Though Bentz is a normal person, he was still able to save his son from injury.
Saving lives, jumping from tall buildings, and flying -- is heroic characteristics. Sammy in John Updike's story “A&P” is not a hero. I believe he is not a hero because Sammy never interacted with the girls, he quit his job to impress the girls, and they never saw his action. Sammy never interacted with the girls, his mindset was just lust and how pleasing they are. “She had on a kind of dirty-pink bathing suit and, what got me the straps were down” (Updike).
Hero: A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities; however, heroism is not synonymous with perfection. Man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. This is apparent in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, a story about the Salem Witch Trials in which Abigail Williams accuses dozens of innocent people of witchcraft. Despite being flawed, John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Elizabeth Proctor can demonstrate their heroism in The Crucible. John Proctor is shown to be both a hero and a flawed man in regards to his lechery.
What is a hero? A hero is someone who has the ability to rise above challenges and is brave enough to sacrifice himself for others. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, by definition, Winston Smith can be considered the novels hero. This is because of his strength and bravery to go against the party. While reader can admire Winston, they can over exceed his actions.

In Albert Camus’, The Plague, Joseph Grand is identified as a hero because he brings salvation to the society of Oran. Joseph Grand’s authenticity and heroism are manifested through relieving suffering, sacrifice, and devoting his life to work. Joseph Grand is identified as a hero due to relieving suffering out of genuineness. Joseph Grand is a municipal clerk in the town of Oran when the plague hits.
The act must be noble, selfless, and compassionate. The act must also benefit someone other than the performer of the act. Following this criterion, Fred Collins is not a hero although he performed a heroic act. Fred Collins is not a hero. As stated by Fred Collins in the text,”Heroes had no shames in their lives, and, as for him, he remembered borrowing fifteen dollars from a friend and promising to pay it back the next day, and then avoiding that friend for ten months...
In the end, a hero is more than just physical traits like strength and supernatural powers. Being a hero means being selfless, brave and putting other people before yourself. Victor best fit this description because he sacrificed years of his life, and even his own life knowing it would benefit the rest of the world. The determination, braveness, courage and devotion Victor had for a single experiment that could go wrong is true heroism.
