Our Action Research Project is focused on global issues and understanding those issues and how it impact affects the students attending Olentangy Liberty High School. By gathering data from the students, we figure out their stances and knowledge about global education and global issues. The topic of global education and issues is important learn about because the world is becoming more socially, economically, and environmentally involved with one another, and these issues can affect student’s lives and future careers, and so having more awareness of global issues and cultures, they will be better equipped for life outside of Powell, Ohio.

Keira Williams is a leader for the program that connects people to study abroad opportunities and how to prepare for an interconnecting world. She experienced the effect of global education first hand, when she traveled out of the country, to China, for the first time. She believed the experience of being a “fish out of water” was a very grounding and humbling experience (Appendix A). Her trip led her to believe in two significant processes a person should learn when young and inexperienced. The idea is to appreciate both “confidence and humility” (Appendix A). Through the process of gaining confidence, students feel better about being able to communicate ideas across different cultures, which is similar to what Stebleton wanted to accomplish. However, Williams added the second stage, humility, which Stebleton and his co-workers did not address. Williams wants students to accept that there are differences and it is okay to have one’s opinions and beliefs challenged if positive results can come from it. Humility adds a dimension to the development which allows the self to gain a deeper awareness of global issues. Lara Setrakian’s three-step program to a healthy media is very similar to what Cornia, Williams, and Stebleton have stated in their analyses, in which it allows for more cultural exchange and comprehension. To have a healthy media for all to enjoy, it must promote a deep understanding, pledge to do no harm or tear people down, and lastly, to embrace the complexities of this world (Setrakian). By having a deep understanding of all topics, it allows individuals to become more informed, accepting and even knowledgeable on foreign topics (Setrakian). When the media pledges to do no harm, freedom of self and press can be an attainable goal. This step is often something all forms of media try to do to create a safe community but gets forgotten to spread information and make quick money (Setrakian). The last part of Setrakian’s plan of having a healthy media is the most impactful, but also the hardest to achieve. However, Lara Setrakian makes it a point to embrace the complexities of the world for one main reason. Setrakian believes, “news is adult education” and it needs to be addressed for a more global perspective (Setrakian). Similar to research conducted for students, research is being done for adults, because many believe globalization and international conflicts will affect everyone on this earth, so why not begin to address for all age
