Agent Samson: Go Carolina Reflection David Sedaris’ “Go Carolina” is a heartfelt and humorous memoir about his childhood growing up in North Carolina. He recounts his experiences with his family, his struggles with his sexuality, and his attempts to fit in with other kids at school. It starts with David in the 5th grade and reliving the first time he met his speech therapist Miss Samson. He compares meeting her for the first time to a crime scene; David as the criminal and Miss Samson as an agent investigating David. He refrains from using vocabulary with "s" sounds to prevent people from discovering his lisp. She is first introduced as an agent, and David recounts their first meeting as being “captured” and “scheduled” which reveals how David was unexpecting Miss Samson. Miss Samson helps David realize he has a lisp, which makes him different from the other kids. This leads to David villainizing her and saying comments like, “So who was she to advise me on anything?” (Sedaris, 2000, p.7). David tries really hard to avoid his lisp with the help of his thesaurus, which prevents Miss Samson from doing her job. He avoids his lisp because of his desire to fit in, however, he’s unable to see Miss Samson trying to help him with his speech impediment. David stops calling her Agent Samson at the very end after she reveals some information about her personal life and David becomes aware that she’s not “a cold-blooded agent…nothing but a slightly dopey, inexperienced speech teacher” (Sedaris, 2000, p.15).
