Two significant thinking shortcomings that resonate throughout Victor Hanson’s op-ed piece “Heavy Price Of Defense Spending Cuts: nations that choose butter over guns atrophy and die” are assumptions and point of view. In order to overcome these thinking shortcomings the reader must analyze the assumptions based off the facts and look at article from a different points of view. Throughout the article Hanson makes many assumptions that without critical thinking can lead the reader to believe them as a fact. One such assumption is “Yet many Americans would probably prefer a new frigate maned by highly trained youth to discourage our enemies.”1 This statement is just an assumption the writer makes in order to sway the readers to agree with is opinion. Hanson’s article is very pro-military and very negative of Obama’s cuts in defense spending, which is very clear in the opening paragraph, “There is plenty of fat in the Pentagon budget that grew after Sept. 11, 2001, but such slashing goes way too far.”3 A person with a pro-military or conservative point of view would quickly agree with Hanson. To avoid this shortcoming it must be looked at the others view it. “Good Critical thinkers, however, do their best to consider and even understand and empathize with the view of others on an issue.”4 A point of view from a person that is dependent upon social programs could see the defense spending cuts as an economic advantage to their needs. Another point of view, is those that are anti-war and wants to see the United States distance itself from foreign conflict would see Obama’s defense cuts a step in the right direction. Looking at Hanson’s article from these points of views shows that it only comes from one perspective, “they also need to apply some measures of critical reasoning to the
