That’s the first line in the poem, “ The Highwayman”, and the author (Noyes 1) makes the reader feel suspenseful feeling by using vivid imagery. Therefore, imagery is critical in a mood and tone for a story or poem alike. “Alfred Noyes “ uses imagery in this poem very well, by describing objects with dark and suspenseful adjectives. “ The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.” (Line 2). These vivid descriptions help the reader imagine the setting of the story, which is dark and dull. Furthermore “Alfred Noyes uses similes to give a more descriptive feeling to the poem “ When they shot him down on the highway, down like a dog in the highway.” (Line 84-85) These similes help the reader picture the setting, seeing the highwayman dead on the road, in a dark gloomy night. “ His face burnt like a brand as the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast: and he kissed its wave in the moonlight.” (Line 33)This beautiful description of him kissing his lover goodbye persuades the reader that even though he is a robber he doesn’t deserve a bad fate.
