The word, histrionic, in itself means “theatrical or dramatic,” so it’s pretty obvious why this disorder is called Histrionic Personality Disorder, or HPD. (Merriam-Webster, 2018) Only 3% of the population is affected by this disease and only a few well known famous people are known to have it. (Harley Therapy, 2015) Someone who has HPD has a distorted image of themself. They only see what others see and they base their self esteem on the approval and attention of others. Because of their need to be noticed, they resort to dramatic and outward antics. (Health Line, 2018) These antics have been normalized by the public when famous people that we look up to, act in the ways histrionics act. These are only a few of the noticable things that come with having Histrionic Personality Disorder. People with HPD might also suffer from depression (because of lack of attention) and can even develop other disorders like manic depression (bipolar disorder) or Narcissistic Personality Disorder. She is a very outgoing person who likes attention and tends to dramatize everything. She posts seductive and sexual pictures of herself on social media and lets all guys follow her. She also acts in ways that are abnormal in society, like taking baths with her friends and outwardly posting pictures of drugs. I also know her family has a history of acting in a way that suggests histrionism. Most people start to experience symptoms by the age of 15 and don’t seek treatment until the age of 40, even though the symptoms lessen and are probably very minimal by that age. She, nor her mom, have been diagnosed, but they probably aren’t aware that they have it. There is also probably not something specific that caused it but the mere fact that the daughter probably looks up to her mother and follows in her footsteps. There is not yet a specific cause for HPD, but it is thought to be passed down through generations. There are probably some circumstances where it is brought on by the environment, but it’s mostly acquired from parents or close relatives. (Out Of The Fog, 2018) Some psychodynamic psychologists believe that it could also be caused from unloving and cold interactions with parents. (Explora, 2018, 885) The brain is mostly affected because there is a malfunction with the catecholamines, which are hormones made by the adrenal glands.
