I am unethical. Before Reading “How (Un)ethical Are You?,” I believed I was unethical. However, reading the article helped me to understand I am a lot more unethical than I believed. The article really got me thinking how ethics applies to everything in life like communication, decisions, myself and other people, etc. I even question my ethics of accepting the article’s message. I appreciate the exposure to “How (Un)ethical Are You?.” Personally, psychology is a complex topic difficult to understand. I believe that part to understanding psychology is to accept the information as open minded as possible. In other words, I read the article’s message as if it was a different language I was trying to learn. The article began by explaining three types of unconscious biases, which includes implicit prejudice, in-group favoritism, and overclaiming credit, to define ethics. In the U.S., people are daily exposed to implicit prejudice through the media. For example, the media may expose racist jokes to improve viewer ratings. However, such unethical decision to improve media business, all circle’s back to the audience’s own decision to continue to expose themselves to such unethical environment. In regard to the media racist joke example, the article does inform how changing our environment can help us with ethics. However and in continuation the joke example, it can become nearly impossible to escape the unethical jokes portrayed the media because the media is everywhere.
