In Ginsberg poem "Howl", written in the 1950's, a group of open-minded individuals who spoke spiritual enlightenment (known as the Beats) tested the conservative nature of the masses. They were open to drug use as this allowed them to express their creative nature and they preached liberal views on life, sex, war, religion, etc. They pride themselves on their openness of sex and homosexuality. The poem encourages the creativity of many artists and writers who encompass their gift through their sexuality and use of drugs. Ginsberg believes that conformity and preconceived notions can be a detriment to an individuals well being as he has seen this first hand in his friend Carl Solomon. Their sexuality allows them to be true to who they are and
