“I just wanna give up” and “I can’t do this anymore”. These phrases are said by many individuals throughout life, but in my opinion no one should never give up in life even if you have lost hope already. This message is shown throughout many poems that talk about some form of survival, and some of these poems are “I Am Offering This Poem” by Jimmy Santiago Baca and also “The Writer” by Richard Wilbur. In these poems, instead of using the plot to portray the message, they instead use a variety of symbols to represent the idea of not giving up in life. At the end of “I Am Offering This Poem” the speaker hopes the reader remembers that even though they feel like no one in the world loves them anymore, the speaker will always love them. “When the world outside no longer cares if you live or die; remember, I love you.”(Santiago Baca 27-30). The speaker wishes that his love can help the reader through a difficult time and motivate them to not give up on life even if they don’t feel loved too. This helps prove to us that the speaker’s love is being used as a symbol of not giving up in life, as the speaker wants the reader to use their love as a reason for not giving up as there is still someone who cares for them in the world.
