“I’m Lovin’ It” – the epitome of America. Nearly everyone in the U.S. knows this phrase, as 68 million people around the world are served each day at various McDonalds locations (McDonalds.com). That means that 68 million people per day are eating meals that heavily lack nutritional value. We are not the ones to blame for this epidemic known as obesity. Obesity is not something that is kept quiet, as an astounding 36.7% of adults are obese – that means roughly every one in three people are combating this health problem. One might think that the companies would take away the unhealthy products that are fueling such a dangerous epidemic; yet, the fast food industry hasn’t hesitated to keep producing meals that hold no nutritional value. In 1971, 6.1% of kids ages 12-19 were diagnosed with obesity; In 2004, that number rose to 18.4% - increasing 3 times as many. Since their opening in 1940, McDonalds has roughly 13,000 locations in America. As this number increases, the likelihood of one of those locations to be near a school also increases. In the article published by Harvard’s school of Public Health, the author states that fast food restaurants moving in closer to schools has been related to “an increased risk of obesity” in young children who go to school (Harvard). The author has a negative point of view toward fast food restaurants locating near schools as it is increasing the risk of obesity in children by providing easy access to their restaurants for young kids. Once the company has successfully been able to grasp the child’s attention and bring them into their restaurants, they provide alternate options of “sizing up” their meals. From a child’s point of view, they see more food on their plate, when really they are getting additional calories that they don’t need. These companies use it to “make more profit” and trick their consumers into thinking that they are getting a good deal (Brownlee). Since children are not adults who can easily tell right from wrong, fast food restaurants are using them as easy targets to profit
