Relying on the Internet Nicholas Carr, author of the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?,” considers the internet to be disconnecting, distracting, and deriving of our brains knowledge and memory. Technology has started to change the way we think, and although we don’t like to admit it, “the deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle” (Carr 1). Our brains now expect us to take in information the same way the internet is distributing it: fast and all at once. The internet is not only causing adults, but also children, to use their brains less and rely more on technology to think for them. For starters, the internet is always accessible and connected to very fast search engines, changing the way people gather information. Stephanie Olsen, author of “Intelligence in the Internet Age,” states that, “Nearly a century ago, Henry Ford didn't have the Internet, but he did have a bunch of smart guys. The auto industry pioneer, as a parlor trick, liked to claim he could answer any question in 30 minutes. In fact, he had organized a research staff he could call at any time to get him the answer. Carr found that, “Even when I’m not working, I’m as likely as not to be foraging in the Web’s info-thickets’reading and writing e-mails, scanning headlines and blog posts, watching videos and listening to podcasts, or just tripping from link to link to link” (2). More often than not, when using the internet, we end up on five other sites that have nothing to do with what we originally were going to look up.
