Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson (January 31, 1919 – October 24, 1972) was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) second baseman who became the first African American to play in the major leagues in the modern era. (Wikipedia, 2016). His first game in the major leagues was April 15, 1947. On that day he started at first base and it marked that day as one of the most historical days in baseball history. Jackie played baseball for 10 seasons, was rookie of the year in 1947, played in 6 All Star games and is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
I chose Jack Robinson because he was a great role model and he influenced the lives of many people. The Segregation of blacks and whites was going on during the time Jackie was in Major League Baseball (MLB). Black history is probably one of my favorite to learn about, so it is no surprise that I would take such joy and excitement of teaching it to children. I 've done this fun, crafty, and educational activity with my three and four-year old at one daycare that I taught at and they absolutely loved it. I 'm very much a history buff as well as a sports fanatic (thanks to my Dad) and I choose the great Jackie Robinson who was essentially the first African-American man to break the color line in major league baseball (MLB) in 1947. An icon is a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something. This man was not only an Icon in baseball, but a civil rights leader, a father of three, and a role model for all young adults. Jackie Robinson was a small town boy who had big-time dreams. He was from a small city in Georgia and always had outstanding athletic abilities. Not only was Jackie a baseball player, but he also played a major role in breaking the color barrier.

Character is the aspect of a person that decides what kind of person he is; it is who he is at his very core, and it affects his tolerance, courage, and sense of justice. Jackie’s dealing with the racism conveys true character, and it teaches the viewer how to behave when put to the test. Specifically, “42” exemplifies true character education in that it depicts Jackie Robinson persisting despite the racial prejudice of spectators, the media, and fellow athletes.
