The word “notorious” is commonly used to describe a subject that is publicly known, usually for some bad quality or deed. Public Enemy Number 01 John “Jackrabbit” Dillinger, a name that once dominated the headlines of newspapers during the Depression-era in the United States of America, is well associated with this word. John Herbert Dillinger was born on June 22, 1903, in Indianapolis, Indiana. At a young age, Dillinger was frequently accustomed to getting himself into trouble in his neighborhood. In the summer of 1924, he was caught robbing a grocery store and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in the Indiana State Prison. With the help of his close acquaintances, Dillinger was able to escape jail on numerous accounts. Within the short amount of time Dillinger was in jail, he wrote letters to acquaintances who were not in jail to help him execute a successful jailbreak. In Dillinger: The Untold Story, it states “On one side was a complete floor plan...the other side...gave detailed instructions for an escape”. (Citation 1, p 76) Dillinger planned his escapes carefully in order to be successful in not only breaking himself out but his fellow acquaintances who were in jail with him as well. His plans were well executed with the help of the loyal people he has been acquainted with, which in the end results with many successful jail escapes. Dillinger’s escape from the Crown Point jail has become well known due to his plan of escape. Within Moreno’s novel, he states, “ Within a few weeks of his arrest... Dillinger escaped from the Crown Point jail using a fake wooden gun”. (Citation 2, p 95) Similar to his other jailbreaks, Dillinger carefully planned out his escape and waited for the right moment to execute his plan. Determined and clever minded, Dillinger tricked the guards into believing he was in possession of a real gun and as his plan unfolded, he successfully escaped the so called escape proof Crown Point jail. News of his escape spread throughout the nation and in response, this became John Dillinger’s most famous escape and the most humiliating event to have occurred at Crown Point.
