In the book “Letter From Rifka” Rifka changed throughout the book. This choice and challenge will discuss how Rifka changed from when her family left their home in Berdichev to America. One of the ways that Rifka changed is that she became braver throughout the story. Another way she changed is that the more challenges she faced to get to America and the longer she waited, the more and more she wanted to enter America.
A large majority of books use many types of literary elements and devices. An example of a literary device is imagery; the five senses. This is one of the most descriptive types of writing as it conveys what the character is feeling or smelling. It’s a more human way of writing in some ways. In the book Fahrenheit 451, the character Montag has a large amount of internal struggle throughout the book.
Rifka is a young jewish girl and her and her family has left from russia (chapter 1) to america to escape the harsh treatment. But the road to becoming free is filled with horrible obstacles like the whole family getting deadly typhus (pg 26) also rifka got split up with her family and she was all alone trying to make it back to her family. Also she gets sick and her hair falls out and has scabs on her head. Finally rifka makes it to ellis island but before she can enter into america the doctors must check and see if her scabs are contagious
Adversity can effect all aspects of our lives very quickly. In the novel Letters from Rifka by Karen Hesse it shows this very well, and in many ways. This story shows how a girl in a her teenage years faces adversity trying to leave Russia to go to America. This essay shows how Rifka overcomes adversity and the people, the things, and the ways she used to get through it. Two of the main obstacles Rifka faced were getting ring worm, and getting held at Ellis Island because she had no hair from the ring worm.
Tangerine Literary Analysis In the novel Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, the main character Paul Fisher has been affected by his brother Erik Fisher in many ways. When Paul and his family moved to Tangerine, he got strange flashbacks and came closer to the truth of why he went blind. He faces bullying, death, and tragic things at Tangerine because of his brother Erik. Nevertheless Erik moved the plot forward while making Paul grow as a person.
In Chapter 9-14 Holden Caulfield leaves Penecy Prep and heads to New York City. Where he will stay for a couple days before winter vacation starts and he will head home. Delaying breaking the news to his family he got kicked out of school for as long as possible. These chapters are where Holden’s loneliness becomes abundantly clear. The reader is subjected to many long rants by Holden about the company he wants, though he attempts to settle several times.
Puritan’s harsh beliefs represented the beginning of the Nineteenth Century in the newly colonized America. Their community ruled with an iron fist: unforgiving, pitiless, stern. In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses his disagreement with puritan priorities by revealing the hypocrisy widely practiced throughout their community. Hawthorne’s utilization of dim diction aids in the establishment of his scornful tone, while inclusion of symbols and intricate juxtaposition all serve to accentuate the Puritan’s duplicity. All these factors combine to develop a critical tone which rebukes puritan society.
Holden Caulfield lives his life as an outsider to his society, because of this any we (as a reader) find normal is a phony to him. Basically, every breathing thing in The Catcher in the Rye is a phony expect a select few, like Jane Gallagher. What is a phony to Holden and why is he obsessed with them? A phony is anyone who Holden feels is that living their authentic life, like D.B. (his older brother). Or simply anyone who fits into society norms, for example, Sally Hayes.
Both Ray Bradbury and E.B. White’s given excepts analyze the purpose of direction in life through descriptions of the natural world. For example, the motif of smells is evident in both excerpts to connect the ideas of direction, observation, and searching to physical images and things. In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury writes “There must have been a billion leaves on the land; he waded in them, a dry river smelling of hot cloves and warm dust” (144). Meanwhile, in Stuart Little, the repairman describes, “I have sat at peace on the freight platforms of railroad junctions in the north, in the warm hours and with the warm smells”. “Warm smells” carries the connotation of being attractive to the senses.
In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Mr. Antolini gives Holden Caulfield advice when he is at one of his lowest points. Already aware of Holden’s mental state and position on school, he quotes Wilhelm Stekel, a psychoanalyst, “The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.” (Salinger 188). Although Holden fails to grasp Mr. Antolini’s message, the quote applies directly to his life because of his relationship with death as a result of his younger brother, Allie’s, death. Mr. Antolini uses this quote specifically because he wants Holden take a step back and try to live for a noble cause instead of resorting to death.
Most juniors in government at Point Park aren’t usually in a position where they are responsible for an entire student body and administration. As for Blake King that is not the case. The 20-year-old and Philadelphia native spoke to a group of students about his presidency on Monday. As King nears the midpoint of his first presidency of USG, he still has goals he wants to implement for the remainder of his term. King wants to reconnect students, help clubs/activities, and find a way to connect with commuter students.
The Prison Door In this Chapter from The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne introduces the setting of the book in Boston. He uses a gloomy and depressed tone in the beginning of the chapter. He is able to convey this tone using imagery while describing the citizens, the prison, and the cemetery. However, as he continues to discuss the rose-bush, he uses parallelism to shift the tone to be brighter and joyful. To create a gloomy and depressed tone, Hawthorne uses imagery.
In the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger readers are introduced to a young man named Holden Caulfield who introduces himself and begins to tell his story of how and why he left his school; Pencey Prep. In the story, Holden explains how he is being kicked out of school and doesn't want his parents to know and so leaves school early. throughout the story, Holden explains what happens to him before he must go home and act like he is home from school for a break instead of being kicked out. When it comes to the topic of Author's purpose of The will of individual vs the will of the majority some will think the purpose is to show that Holden going against the will of society to rebel, however, I think the author’s purpose of The Catcher in the Rye was to show that the individual will manifest in his desire for isolation comes from his is fear and damage done by fear of pain, failure, rejection, and is unwilling or unable to go along with the majority. This all shown through Imagery, symbolism, and diction.
This is a literary analysis on the novel 1984 by George Orwell. 1984 is a more recent classic dystopian novel. Written in 1949, it's based in the future year of what is presumed to be 1984. It focuses on the life of Winston Smith, a member of the newly established Party that rules over a territory called Oceania and that is led by a man called Big Brother. This novel provides a rather frightening insight into a dystopian socialist environment.
Kate Chopin’s The Awakening is a piece of fiction written in the nineteenth century. The protagonist Edna is a controversial character, Edna rebels against many nineteenth - century traditions, but her close friend Adele was a perfect example in terms of a role of a woman, mother and wife at that time. Chopin uses contrast characters to highlight the difference between Adele and Edna. Although they are both married women in the nineteenth century, they also exhibit many different views about what a mother role should be.
