One flew over the cuckoo’s nest An antihero is described as someone who has flaws and who is gritty, the antihero may not always think of what the right thing is to do and may work towards his own end. The antihero often seeks redemption for his own satisfaction and sometimes even for the benefit of society. R.P. McMurphy displays the traits of an anti hero from the way he views himself as being above the rule set around him, thinking he is untouchable, to the way he sees his actions as being for the good of his fellow ward mates. McMurphy is a large character and is confident labelling himself the “bull goose Looney” of the ward. This self-given title gives a lot of insight in to McMurphy’s character and highlights how he sees himself as above others. …show more content…
Alex inspires his gang to commit crimes and fulfil their desires to commit heinous acts, this could be compared to the way that McMurphy inspires the men on the ward to question authority and rebel against the control they are under. McMurphy’s larger-than-life personality instils courage to the men around him; this is illustrated when the group of men are out to fish. When the group are heading to the fishing dock it is described that the men were staring down onlookers and were unafraid of judgement because McMurphy was with them. In the same trip, when McMurphy’s “aunt” was being insulted by some of the seamen, none of the men would defend her honour and let her be insulted, as is said in the book “All our hard-boiled strength just walked up those steps with his arm around the shoulders of the bald-headed captain”, this tells of how McMurphy encourages his group and helps them to express themselves.
