Fighting isn’t the right way to solve a problem. Friendship is the right way to make things right. Mexican Whiteboy by Matt de la Pena is about a boy who went to Mexico for the summer. Danny was quite shy when he’s in his home country. He then gets into a fight which led him to get stitches. Mexican Whiteboy consists of a loyal character, many interwoven conflicts, and a unique theme which makes it a great book for a mature audience that like different types of sports such as baseball. This novel has a loyal character who strives to fit in while he’s in Mexico for the summer, but an unexpected fight goes on. After the fight, Danny defends Uno by telling what happened in his own fault. Danny knows that he’s loyal to everyone once he hears, “Couple of stitches ain’t so bad if you got everybody’s respect now.” (62) He has that particular feeling which he feels that he’s responsible for his actions. Being loyal leads to friends along the way. Danny on the other hand “pulls his wallet from his back pocket, takes out a twenty, and holds it out for Uno.” (141) Danny and Uno’s friendship are coming together without any conflict. As each and every conflict occurring to Uno, suspense starts to grow throughout the book. The main plot starts off, “ delivering an overhead right that smashes flush into Danny’s face.” (24) This sustains an action-packed description. As the fighting ends, more and more conflicts appear. Danny’s cousin, Sofe, gets angry at Uno as she says, “I’m gonna sneak into your apartment one night with a knife.” (57) Vengeance can spread once a fight ends.
