“Time collapses in the lips of strangers” (Lorde, line 1). In the poem Never to Dream of Spiders by Audre Lorde the poet uses figurative language, imagery, and tone to portray the purpose of mourning. Mourning in literature is used to support people facing their fears and to get through loss. In this poem mourning is used to support people going through obstacles changing what once was.
What is the comparison between an iron wall and what you believe in? Halfway through the first stanza Lorde delivers constant everyday fear that people feel on an everyday basis. Using the comparison of an iron wall she delivers “my days collapse into a hollow tube / soon implodes / against now / like an iron wall” (Lorde, lines 2-4). As restriction goes on day-by-day one feels like exploding since there’s a lack of happiness to go on for. This simile gives another view on mourning especially within oneself. Going deep and personal feeling like that old part of you is gone because now you're worrying about your fears.
