He talks about how the soup tasted. This is quite strange because normally there would be no correlation because of how the soup tasted and the circumstances of the hanging. However, the soup is really just a metaphor of how they all were feeling. An example from the book is, “the soup tasted better than ever” (Wiesel, 61). This was on the night of a hanging of an older child that had actually committed a crime so they were very desensitized to this.
