Introduction

Art had been a part of French culture and flourished with a style of its own since the Rococo period starting from early eighteenth century while transforming itself into various other styles based on the circumstances that surround the artist at various periods of time. In this essay we will look into details of how artist and their styles made an impact on the people of France and changed their attitude, thus transforming and inspiring them to start a major revolution against the monarch. Among the various artist we will first look in details into the work of Jacques-Louis David and his painting the Oath of the Horatii from 1784, classified into the Neo-Classicism style. A period when everyone wanted art to promote the virtue, self sacrifice and bravery, the Oath of the Horatii was a masterpiece that no one had ever seen before. The background of the painting was about the war between the Romans and Alba. It was decided that instead of an entire army going into war they would choose three brothers from each side to fight each other and the outcome would be considered as the overall outcome of the battle. The central point of focus in this image is the lady symbolized as Liberty whose dress had fallen from her shoulders which is a symbol of the birth of democracy. In the picture amidst the chaos, liberty is seen holding the french national flag and she represents a slave symbolized by the cap she wears. She is seen leading the people behind her to move forward and fight against the monarch. The people surrounding the lady represent people from all walks of life who are participating in the revolution ranging from lower income group to high society people. This was clearly represented by the artist who shows two men on the left of Liberty matching this description. The cost of the revolution was shown at the bottom of the image where people are seen lying motion less which signifies that this revolution had a cost associated with it in terms of lives that it took. Even though this painting showed the moment of time frozen from the French revolution and later bought over by the king after the revolution, it was returned to the artist as it was deemed dangerous since it united the people and also pictured how a king was overthrown by the revolutionist (Delacroix - Liberty Leading the People,
