In the book the Cay the protagonist is Phillip an11 year old boy who lives in Curacao during World War II. German U-Boats surround the island of Curacao forcing Phillip to leave with his Mom to the United States sailing in the S.S. Hato. Phillip is a complex character, his behavioral transform though out the novel. Phillip shares his mom’s views of being prejudice towards other races. We can see that when he refers to the locals as black people. At the beginning of the story he is racist, he has a bad temper and is rude. One negative characteristic inhered by Phillip from his mother is his prejudice. When the S.S.
