Michael Pollan’s alternative to Factory farming has given a huge insight into a better ethics on food. In “The Animals: Practicing Complexity” Michael Pollan writes about a polyface farm and how it works. The goal of a polyface farm is to emotionally, economically, and environmentally enhance agriculture. Everything on a polyface farm has the potential to be helpful to something else on the farm. Pollan states “The chicken feed not only feeds the broilers but, transformed into chicken crap, feeds the grass that feeds the cows that, as I was about to see, feeds the pigs and the laying hens” (Pollan 345).

The author of the book Michael Pollan doing his report for New York Times magazine decided to research from where is his food comes from. In Michael Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma, he identifies the humans as omnivores who eat almost everything, which has been developed into a dominant part of mainstream unhealthiness, gradually causing the severe eating disorder consequences among people. Pollan offers his opinion that throughout the process of the natural history of foods, deciding “what should we have for dinner” can stir the anxiety for people based on considering foods’ quality, taste, price, nutrition, and so on.
Are We Really What We Eat? An Analysis of “Consider the Lobster” In David Foster Wallace’s essay “Consider the Lobster” he argues that we as a human race should be empathetic to what we eat and close the gap between animal rights activists and gourmet food lovers in which he does so very effectively. The largest point of David’s argument is the issue of morality, this is a strategic move on his end because as human beings we are all concerned with how we are perceived by society and focus our lives and actions around the concept of conforming to societal norms. In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads.
In the book, The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan, Pollan claims we should be more knowledgeable about what we consume as omnivores. As omnivores we have a variety of food, we can choose from, however, we don’t regularly make the best decisions for ourselves. Pollan argues this by showing us where our food really comes from and how we can find many unwanted extras. Pollan shows us that we’ve evolved as humans from how we used to eat to how we eat now. In the article “My Fast Food Meal” by Michael Pollan, fast food is explained In-N-Out. Pollan’s son, Isaac, convinces his reluctant mom to go to McDonald’s by telling her she can get a salad. The option for the whole family to get whatever meal they desire is a marketing tactic that makes sure there is something for everybody, so kids can convince parents to go and get fast food. Pollan’s family heads to the car to enjoy the meal, as many American families do. In fact, about 19 percent of American meals are eaten in a car.
Everything that we do in life is a choice. It takes more than eating to become obese. Balko States, “We’ll all make better choices about diet, exercise, and personal health when someone else isn’t paying for the consequences of those choices.” People in today’s society don’t take accountability for their unhealthy choices because they don’t have to, the government makes it okay not to. Personal responsibility should be primary in our nutrition choices.
A strong suggestion Pollan encourages, to his readers, is gardening. Gardening soothes the soul, produces more local produce, and reduces ones ' carbon footprint according to Pollan. Throughout the article, Pollan shows he understands that to make a differnece about climate change it may be difficult and a long process but is possible. By adding humor, specific diction, and concessions Pollan can make his argument in why we, as a society, should bother to do something about climate change. Looking at the people today it amazes me that we do so many great things yet we can’t control ourselves when it comes to what we eat. We have a community full of obese people except for a small part of the population. When you look outside you no longer see anybody walking around, there are only cars. On each street there are at least 10 different fast food places and occasionally you’ll drive by a whole foods, but it will be mostly deserted unless you’re able to afford the food in there. Everything you see is always in close proximity to make sure no extra walking is required.

A majority of people eat harmful foods and do not receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy. There are a number of reasons why nutrition is lacking.
