Living Dead in Denmark by Qui Nguyen is a mash-up of William Shakespeare and modern-day fantasies. The story revolves around an apocalyptic world where the main character Ophelia, along with Lady MacBeth, Juliet, and Horatio, travel around to save the world. The play incorporates a great sense of direction under the watch of director Mr. River. The overall aura of the advertisements and the opening scene set a distinctive feeling about the play. The play’s embodiment of the themes, scenery, performance, and plot twists made into an exceptional and one-of-a-kind performance. The themes of the play were very thought-provoking. Actors such as Johnmark Bautista gave off a great aura throughout the play through the performance of his three characters, the gravedigger, Caliban, and Guildenstern. His singing as the gravedigger in act one, scene two and the Caliban in act two, scene five gave a very comedic and uplifting effect for the play overall. The use of profanity and his style of speech greatly enhanced that scene and made the audience members, including myself, laugh. The singing ability of Johnmark also made the play much more enjoyable. Another example of a great performance was Ethan Towner’s character as Hamlet, which was sometimes disguised as the ghost. His quote “If you were anymore of a pu*sy, I’d have to shave you. (He drops his cowl) And it’s good to see you haven’t changed a bit, dude” sums up how marvelous his performance was. This quote was chosen because it includes all the qualities that Ethan included in his character, which ranged from intimidating to comedic.
