In this book, author Tara J. Yosso demonstrates how institutional power and racism affect the Chicano/a educational pipeline by weaving together critical race theory and counterstories. Critical race theory is a framework used to discover the ways race as well as racism implicitly and explicitly shape social structures, practices, and discourses(Yosso, pg.4). Counterstories refer to any narrative that goes against majoritarian stories, in which only the experiences and views of those with racial and social privilege are told. The counterstory methodology humanizes the need to change our educational system and critical race theory provides a structure for Yosso to base her research. This results in a beautiful hybrid of empirical data, theory, and fascinating narratives that works to analyze how forms of subordination shape the Chicana/o pipeline, while also exposing how institutions, structures, and discourses of education maintain discrimination based on gender, race, class and their intersections.

Scott Kurashige’s The Shifting Grounds of Race: Black and Japanese Americans in the Making of Multiethnic Los Angeles exposes its’ readers to the history of race and politics in the city of Los Angeles, California. In his research, the author describes the political history of Japanese and Black Americans in LA by discussing the interethnic cooperation and competition each group faced while dealing with bigoted and racist beliefs and challenges that white people threw their way. Kurashige’s research focuses most on how these two racial groups at Little Tokyo/Bronzeville produce entirely different responses to the political sphere around them after World War II. In the book, National Colors: Racial Classification and the State in Latin America, author Mara Loveman examines the history of racial classification in Latin American nations, through the use of census records. There are three main questions that the author works to answer throughout the book. The first, is why did these nations historically classify populations by their race? Why did they eventually decide to stop using this method for some time and why was it brought back? The author also looks at the different ways these nations are influenced by other nations, and how this affects the recording of these populations over time.

In the article, "Race as a Social Construct" Emanuel Lusca tells about his and other views on race stating how it's a social construction. Lusca fulfilled his goal to convince his spectators by giving multiple examples and facts. Lusca uses many writers work as examples to tell about their views on race. A couple of examples of the multiple writers work he uses are Ruth Frankenberg, John Searle, Franz Boas, and Takaki.
The four texts I have chosen are Crips and Bloods: Made in America directed by Stacy Peralta, The Secret Life of Bees written by Sue Monk Kidd, The Help directed by Tate Taylor and Selma directed by Ava DuVernay. These texts all have the theme of segregation of black and white people in America. Segregation in America in the 1960s was a very large issue at this time, yet is still a part of our society today. A significant connection that unites the two texts Crips and Bloods and The Secret Life of Bees is the theme of segregation of black and white people.

In the autobiographies Black Boy and Separate Pasts, the authors illustrated how segregation affected people differently according to age. Black Boy written by Richard Wright depicted how life in the segregated South was for an African-American Boy in the early 1900s. Separate Pasts written by Melton McLaurin illustrated the life of a white American in a small segregated city in Wade, North Carolina in the 1940s and 1950s. While Black Boy demonstrated the hardships an African-American had to go through in order to live in the South, Separate Pasts illustrated the way a white American interacted and viewed African-Americans in his community. Segregation was much more lenient on younger children than adults.
The foundations of a U.S. Latino politics has its shared experiences and common interest. There are some political studies from the 1920’s and 1930’s, but the Voting Rights Act to Hispanic communities was in 1975. The VRA was the beginning era of national recognitions, also the beginning of expectations for Hispanics politics other then Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans, or Puerto Ricans. Theres been large changes in the mid-1960’s in the Latino population which created shares interests with Latinos in there ancestries and origins. From all the Latinos as in Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and others have to be heard and understood for todays Latino Politics.
The hidden history of the Chicanx community in the United States that I have never familiarized myself with was presented by the ethnic studies course offered by the Sophie’s Scholars Program in Sacred Heart Schools. Throughout the two summers I devoted to education in Sacred Heart Schools through the Sophie’s Scholars Program in the sixth and seventh grade, I was to take four classes: a math course, a science course, a multicultural literature class, and an ethnic studies class. It was the middle of summer; the air was hot and humid, and by the end of the day, students were eager to leave campus, go home, and feel the summer breeze in the afternoon. Meanwhile, I did not enjoy having to go to school for six weeks of my summer, but I was getting accustomed to the new
