Everyday there are new victims to this unjustified social issue, and everywhere it happens, but the victims are helpless to stop it. This social issue perpetuates inequality, offensive stereotypes, and unpleasant remarks or observations. This social issue is known as sexism towards women, and its continuity is being preserved by men. The artifact in question is a comic series called “Archie”. Although, not the entire series itself, but rather a specific piece, which states “that all women are failures, otherwise they would have been men”. What need does sexism fulfill to enjoy a fruitful, and productive life? According to Rebecca Solnit, men use sexism, and the violence that comes with it to control women. (Solnit 526) Although, this is more of the extreme side of sexism, which is considered to be gender abuse, it is nonetheless a problem that needs to be answered. It also needs to be acknowledged that sexism against men is also prevalent, but on a smaller scale than women. With sexism against men being overlooked, because men are supposed to be seen as emotionless or suspend their feelings altogether to be seen with a stronger trait of masculinity. This close-minded view not only hurts men, but it also opens the possibility of hurting women in the process. For example, an average woman might want to find an attractive guy, who fits the stereotype of what it means to be masculine or who exudes machismo. Potentially, this might reinforce the idea of sexism unto boys, thus manliness being a byproduct of sexism; which can also, apply for what it means to be a woman as well. Sexism seems to be composed of what it means to be a specific gender, for example, women are supposed be to ladylike, whilst women who do not fit that description are considered undesirable. Men who might be emotional, and/or gets hurt easily might be associated with effeminate traits. The fight for women’s equality is more commonly known as the feminist movement, but sometimes this can be misconstrued for something else. If people say that the movement is about something other than obtaining the same equality men are treated with; because of this, chances are it is not a feminist group. It’s like saying the KKK is fighting for white equality, and white history (Pride) when what it really is, is just religious extremist group. Man’s power over women is not something new, and never was; because men have always had the upper hand, whether it was from religion or from government rules.
