“Woman Hollering Creek” by Sandra Cisneros, tells the story of Cleófilas, a young woman who is trapped in an abusive marriage. At the beginning of the story, Cleófilas has just married her husband Juan Pedro, and upon crossing the creek for the first time as newlyweds the creek reflects back her hopes for her future. “lovely…pretty and full of happily ever after” (Cisneros 1402). However, as her husband’s beatings continue her outlook on life, and her view of the creek, become bleaker. Although initially fascinated by the ambiguous name of the creek, La Gritona, or Women Hollering Creek, Cleófilas soon recognizes the parallels between the folktale of a weeping woman and her own.
