Jack’s Character Development in The Shining Imagine a small family going out to stay in an empty hotel, all alone in the deep Rocky Mountains. The Torrance family began to caretake a hotel in the middle of winter in a hotel far in the Rockies. Jack, who was the recovering alcoholic father, thought it was the perfect way to get his life back in order; he jumped at the opportunity to have some free time because he was a writer and he wanted some time to be able to continue his writing. By him taking the job at the hotel also came with some worries; there had previously been a family brutally murdered by the father, but Jack had no worries, he just thought it gave the place a more interesting look.
Jerry Renault is a student at a catholic college prep school called Trinity. Trinity’s school gang, the Vigils, acts as one of the school’s ruling figures due to its psychological abuse in the forms of pranks forced upon bright eyed and naïve boys at the school. The Vigils is led by a particularly troubled boy, Archie Costello, who is specifically feared due to his role as Assigner, someone who gives the pranks to the students to carry out. Brother Leon, the other ruling figure at Trinity, is a heavily feared teacher who becomes temporary Headmaster. Brother Leon embezzles school money into increasing the scale of the school’s annual chocolate fundraiser.
Jack is a recovering alcoholic who struggles with his thoughts, guilt and has flashbacks about his past transgressions. Wendy is a strong character and loving wife who has blonde hair. Danny is a five year old boy who is self-reliant whose vocabulary is way beyond his year. Furthermore, Jack friend Al Shockley hires him to watch the Overlook Hotel.
Yet, in the beginning of the novel, he quit drinking and seems to take control over his life. He seems to have the will to better himself and take care of his family. He sees his job on the Overlook, as a way of reconciliating with his family and to pursue his dream job, writing a play. Although it started of as a good idea, the Overlook eventually takes over Jack. On a more realistic kind of horror, Jack is a human that is struggling with himself.
Not to say that it skimps on the horror, because it doesn't. Odd Thomas does a great job building on impending sense of dread by making it one of the main focuses of the film. Then tries to deliver and equally excellent bout of revulsion only for it fall a little flat. Odd Thomas is about.. well, Odd Thomas (Anton Yelchin) a short order cook who can see dead people.
This already shows the audience that she is more capable of being strong and independent without her husband dominating her. What gives the concept that the hotel they are staying at is isolated is the high string intense music that plays throughout selected scenes in the film like when Wendy is trying to run away from Jack while he tries to find and kill her, there is nobody around and she is alone to defend herself, there is high intense string music playing. In the scene where Jack’s unpredictability shows is when he yells at her, seeming to blame her for something that is entirely black and white, his fault. He says “do you have the SLIGHTEST IDEA, what a MORAL AND ETHICAL PRINCIPLE IS, DO YOU? Has it ever occurred to you what would happen to my future, if I were to fail to live up to my responsibilities?

Based on the cinematography, it is evident that wide shots of the characters occupy a small space alone or an extremely large space with many people who are completely unaware of their existence. Both of these things work to portray the idea that Murray's character, Bob, and Johansson's character, Charlotte, are lonely, isolated, and missing something. The director also uses the concept of balance to pass the message on the emotional state of the characters.
The Story has a man daydreaming in his car, while the movie has a man going on a worldwide quest for a negative photo. This intrigues the audiences with a feel for adventure. The movie also Introduces the love interest of Walter, Cheryl. This adds the extra suspense in the movie. This is because the audience doesn't get to know if they get together.
Although to begin with he may be a loving father to Danny, he still has some anger built up within himself. After moving into the hotel, he gradually begins to become more irritable with people interrupting him while he is working in the main lobby. At the same time Jack is writing his book, he appears to be seen in a red sweater, that once was worn by the previous caretaker who murdered his family at the Overlook hotel. Jack becomes overwhelmed by the isolation, in which he begins to change into the psychopath killer. The film would drag on with no change in a character, to make the movie
