Horwitz’s book breaks down the life of John Brown, an antislavery warrior. John Brown was raised in a very strong in his Calvinism faith that was instilled in him by his father, Owen Brown. Owen Brown made sure that John was raised properly with a strong heart of faith in Calvinism. Calvinism is “a faith ever vigilant against sin and undue attachment to the things of this world (9).”
“The Undercurrent” by Kellie Young is a story of a mother and daughter’s relationship that takes place in Hawaii throughout Young’s childhood. It describes to readers how her mother has influenced her life by becoming an admonitory voice inside her head. The impact Young’s mother has on her is widely due to the amount of admiration Young has for her. A crucial element to “The Undercurrent” is the short stories found throughout her narrative that exemplifies the greater concept of how her mother has shaped her life.
Me and my sister don’t live together and never get to see each other. So sometimes I get three of the pictures i have of her and go to my room and just stare at them. It’s kind of like sal because she has a lot of memory’s of her mom, like I do of my sister. In the novel walk two moons by Sharon Creech, Bybanks is an important setting to sal because she has a lot of memory’s of her mom there such as the singing tree, the blackberry kiss, and the postcards her mom sent her. One way Bybanks is an important setting to sal is she preserves the memory of her mom by the singing tree.
It is evident that in the story that no main character has a legitimate and clear view of life. She offers examples about each of the four main characters and how their views on life, affected their overall fate. For example, she discussed how Pete did not take his affair with Maggie seriously, and how he ultimately hoped to have a relationship with Nell, but Nell does not see him in a positive way and thinks he is a fool. Pete was not viewing this part of his life clearly because he wants a relationship with a woman who does not want him while all the long he is involved with a woman who does. Maggie is another example.

The book, “Where Am I Wearing?”, by Kelsey Timmerman tells the journey that Timmerman embarked on to discover where his clothes were made and who made them. He traveled to rare places like Honduras, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and China to talk to the people behind his clothing in an attempt to better understand globalization and to minimize the difference between small-scale and large-scale stories and processes. “Where Am I Wearing?”, connects themes from Geography 2750 such as population dynamics, urbanization, and economics through small-scale stories and puts emphasis on how they affect large-scale processes. In the book, Timmerman helps explain the themes of population dynamics on page 172 of his book.

Marge Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time follows the plight of a thirty-seven-year-old Mexican -American woman named Consuelo “Connie” Ramos. Impoverished, childless and without support from her extended family, Connie is placed in a mental institution for an alleged outburst of violent behavior. While at this mental hospital, her only escape from society is her intermittent trips to the future through the help from Luciente, an individual from the year 2137. During her trips to the future society of Mattapoisett, Connie discovers that women were no longer responsible for childbearing, children are encouraged to create their own identities as well as society is now classless, gender neutral and upholds a culture of distinct races. Through these visits, Connie comes to terms that her decisions could possibly determine the course of history.
“I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move” written by Louise Erdrich focuses on a child and a grandfather horrifically observing a flood consuming their entire village and the surrounding trees, obliterating the nests of the herons that had lived there. In the future they remember back to the day when they started cleaning up after the flood, when they notice the herons without their habitat “dancing” in the sky. According to the poet’s biographical context, many of the poems the poet had wrote themselves were a metaphor. There could be many viable explanations and themes to this fascinating poem, and the main literary devices that constitute this poem are imagery, personification, and a metaphor.
