Everyone has a mentor in their life. Some may not realize, but we all do. It may be a parent, a friend, or anyone. Someone to be there for you and to act like a sibling. In the novel “Tangerine” , Luis Cruz acts like a mentor to Paul by helping him find new interests, helps him with his grades and projects, and cares about his health, and Paul in general. Even though Paul does have a real brother, Erik, Luis acts more of like a brother to him then he does just a friend. As a mentor, Luis Cruz helps Paul find new interests for him to enjoy. For example, Luis takes Paul to the groves and shows him new activities to take part in. As Luis shows him around, he starts to realize that he is in fact liking the groves. Paul states “I walked up to Luis and offered my hand to shake...I’m really interested in this stuff” (Bloor 165). Paul feels thankful for the way Luis treats him. Luis acts like a real, true big brother to Paul. Even though Paul does have Erik, he would never help Paul or really show Paul new subjects to enjoy. Luis wants to help Paul to succeed and do well in school. Paul and a couple of other kids are in a group and must do a project. Luis decides to offer his time and show all of the boys around the groves. “Luis is real interested in helping us too. He’ll show us how it’s done. We figure we’ll get all this research in. Then we’ll have an organizational meeting probably with Luis” (153). Theresa explains to the group that she knows Luis would be interested in helping with the groves. Luis wants to provide information to the boys to teach them. “Luis stopped about five rows in pointed, around him...this is a grove. We grow fruit”.
