Dreams lead everywhere
Dreams are what people live for yet, in life, dreams are almost never lived. In The Absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian written by Sherman Alexie the main character Junior tries to follow his dreams. Dreams are what people should strive for but yet many do not even try to follow them.
Junior’s sister and Sherman Alexie both were following their dreams to “save their lives”. Junior has a sister in the book who is lived in their basement and was not following her dreams, while in “Superman and Me” Sherman Alexie writes about how he is trying to follow his dreams to save his life. When Junior is trying out for the basketball team, he doesn’t know what will happen but is following his dream. While in “Superman and Me” Sherman Alexie says Indians do not follow their dreams because an Indian on the “rez” who is smart is very rare. Junior “almost didn’t try out for the Rearden basketball team” because he thought he “wasn’t good enough to make even the C squad” and “didn’t want to get cut from the team”. (Absolutely True Diary 135) Junior ended up trying out for the basketball team because his dad told him to follow his dreams. Sherman Alexie in “Superman and Me” says that any Indian that is smart on the reservation “might have been called a prodigy” but they were living on the reservation “and is simply an oddity” because Indian children were not expected to succeed so most Indian children never lived their dreams (Superman). When Junior was trying out for the basketball team he almost did not even try out because he thought he would fail. He ended up following his dream and making it on the team.
