“Earthmoving Malediction” by Heather McHugh is a poem written about a house being figuratively demolished by the narrator, the narrator then illustrates the frustration she has and her all-or-nothing attitude. The tone of the poem is very bitter. The narrator is blunt in her assessment of the ended relationship. She is saddened because she has somehow lost her love, but angry because of how it ended or the fact that she has all these memories that still hurt her. The first stanza is talking about the demolition of a home.

The loved ones are left with the remorse, despondence, and grieving, while the dead are absolved of their worldly anguish. In “The Grieving Never Ends”, Roxanne Roberts employs a variety of rhetorical tactics including metaphors, imagery, tone, and syntax to illustrate the indelible effects of suicide on the surviving loved ones. Roberts effectively uses metaphors to express the complex, abstract concepts around suicide and human emotion in general.
The mother affirms grief after conversing about her husband with tears running down her face. In the following quote: “Your father always acted like he was the roughest, strongest man on earth. Bambara sets her story in the rural South in the United States of America. With a house near some woods, Granny, Granddaddy Cain, and a group of their relatives enjoy a private life away from white people. Poe confesses his true fears about being prematurely buried, ’’to be buried while alive is, beyond question, the most terrific of these extremes which has ever fallen to the lot of mere mortality’’. (1) We see the development of the theme of being buried alive through the unnamed narrator who becomes more and more anxious about being buried alive due to his untimely fits of catalepsy. Christopher Dribble argues that, ‘’Poe’s unnamed narrator describes in Gothic detail his increasing paranoia and excruciating fear of hasty or untimely burial’’ (3).
Grief V. Love: The Ultimate Emotional Brawl “Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim,” was once written by the author Vicki Harrison. In the short story Catch the Moon, by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the character Luis learns to “swim” with the assistance of the power of love. Cofer creates this story with the underlying message, grief has negative effects on people, however, love has the power to overcome the obstacles created by grief.
The attitudes to grief over the loss of a loved one are presented in two thoroughly different ways in the two poems of ‘Funeral Blues’ and ‘Remember’. When I was nine years old (2010), death touched my family through my older sister, Margot Kate Jackson Fowler, known by many as Katie Fowler. This affected me in tremendous ways which will stay with me for life. Whenever I see or hear of death regarding family members, I draw instant connections to the death of my sister. When guddu and Saroo were separated that night, not knowing that it would be their last moment together; they didn’t say goodbye. I can relate to this on a personal level as I never got to say goodbye to my sister.
