Cole Matthew’s Anger

Cole Matthews is the angry and damaged protagonist of the book Touching Spirit Bear. In the book he is banished to an island to overcome his anger issues instead of spending time in jail. Cole’s anger is a result of his abusive childhood and how his mother and father have treated him.

His anger results from the beatings and abuse he received as a child. As demonstrated here, “As Cole kept screaming. His dad kept hitting him.”(Mikaelsen 54). That beating was one of many. His father was strapping him with a belt and turned it around to strap him with the buckle. Cole 's father, WIlliam Matthews, is an alcoholic with a tendency to beat his son.
