Cole was beaten by him throughout his childhood. This pain and anger gave him the personality and characteristic to inflict pain on other people. The two final themes have a very strong connection. In order to heal, mentally and physically, you have to learn to forgive and receive forgiveness. This was a lesson the reader and the main character, Cole, experience throughout the book.
The relationships in Cole’s life all had a different impact on him but specifically his relationship with Peter affected him a lot. Especially the part of the book when Cole found out that Peter told on him. “‘You’re a dead man,’ he warned... He laughed when he saw fear in Peter’s eyes”(7-8). This shows the relationship at the beginning of the book and clearly it wasn’t good.
At the beginning of the novel, Cole Matthews is a vicious teenager who thinks he is superior to everyone, but is, in fact, hiding behind a shield of anger, the result of being brutally abused by his drunken father. Cole’s father, Mr. Matthews, drinks non stop until he becomes a monster, and then ruthlessly beats Cole up. When talking to Garvey, a proud, Tlingit indian, who is also his parole officer, Cole opens up about his father’s abuse saying, “‘You don’t know what it’s like being hit over and over until you’re so numb you don’t feel anything!” (Mikaelsen 28).
Chris McCandless, alias Alexander Supertramp, was known for his high regard of nature. Chris lived for excitement, never skipping a chance at adventure, with a respect towards the nomadic lifestyle. In the book, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer tells the story of how Chris divorced his parents to live in the wild. Living off the western land for 2 years, he grew an unassailable passion towards adventure and developed an individualistic personality. He began his last journey in the high-maintenance Alaskan terrain after his journey throughout the west.
Superman is a man of superhuman powers who time and time again, saves Metropolis from certain doom. However Superman is an extreme example, a hero is generally someone of great courage who does something for the greater good despite the risk involved. Jon Krakauer, author of Into the Wild, wrote a book about a young man named Chris McCandless who abandons his old life to attempt to be self reliant in the wild. Krakauer believes Chris to be a man of heroism, however Chris was far from hero, he was a man who was selfish and ill-prepared who had a dream that turned into a nightmare from his own doings. All of Krakauer’s opinions of Chris are just false hopes and misinterpretations of his life and the purpose of his journey.
Into the Wild is a short story that took place in 1996. The story is about a guy named Christopher McCandless who decided to set out on a journey to the Alaskan wilderness. He choose to give up his savings to charity and get rid of his possessions. Wayne Westerberg is one of the characters in the story who meets Christopher along his journey. “He...owns a grain elevator in Carthage and another one a few miles out of town but spends every summer running a custom combine crew that follows the harvest from Texas north to Canadian border.
Into the wild is a book, by Jon Krakauer, which tells the captivating story of how a man's imaginable future of an impoverished life, excluded from society, eventually leads him to his everlasting Utopia. Chris McCandles was a man who was not fascinated by the companionship of society. He was a man who found joy in living a life, which some would call underprivileged. He was a man who showed his strong-will through his determination to live a life full of alluring adventure in the wilderness. As Chris wrote, "No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild."
Have you ever felt close to a certain animal, as if you share the same traits? I share the traits of a lot of animals, and was hard pressed to narrow it down to four. In Language Arts class, we did a novel study on the book Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. In this novel, the main character is on an island and was told to carve a totem of his spirit animals. We, too, were forced to create a totem.

Everything will turn out right in the end, and Cole exhibits this. The whole reason that Cole ended up o the island in the first place is because he made bad choices. These choices led to more bad choices and then Cole had a traumatic experience. This changes Cole’s life forever.
Because of his abrupt behavior, Cole has done many unintelligent things, such as burning his shelter on the island. His anger is his choice if Cole communicates by showing anger, isn’t he responsible for all of his actions? Cole has runined so many options of a better life that have come to him. It isn’t surprising that Cole wasn’t in support of the banishment process. In chapter 2, Cole started to search for an escape on the island, he loathed the shelter, the lonleyness, and the fact that he has no one to blame.

In my Language Arts class, we read the book “Touching Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelsen. In this novel, a troubled teenage boy named Cole is banished to an island to find and heal his soul after he severely beats a kid. During his stay on the island, Cole realizes that he is similar to several different animals.
That Garvey and Edwin’s ways were helpful. As he starts using their ways he soon begins to feel enlightened and able to control his anger and to stop blaming others and accept responsibility. Along with this he learns how to be able to accept other people’s personalities and ways of doing things like Garvey and Edwin with their mysterious yet wise advice. All these previous events leading up to the acceptance of Garvey and Edwin’s advice showed that they were key to his acceptance but if he were to accept their ideas and ways in the first place there wouldn’t be any affect because he would still have the stubborn personality and just wanting to avoid jail. The book Ghost of Spirit Bear is a sequel to the book Touching Spirit Bear. I enjoyed this book because it has a good story and plot. While this book is not as adventurous or moving as the first book Ghost of Spirit Bear still has a good plot and creates vivid pictures in your mind while reading. I prefered Touching Spirit Bear over this book because it has more adventure and a more shocking story. The book consists mainly of the same characters but more were added when Peter and Cole go to school.
Cole emphasizes in his lyrics that “life can’t be no fairytale, no once upon a time; but [he’ll] be God damned if a n***a don’t be tryin’”. Despite all the shortcomings of his city, that won’t stop Cole from trying to make something out of himself. In comparison, I always had to learn things the hard way, and I always failed at what I tried to achieve. However my mistakes never stopped from moving forward and I continue to overcome any obstacles that stand in my way.
