The TED talk, ‘The Danger of a Single Story’ presented by Adichie, shares the negative consequences of being exposed to only one perspective. Hearing only one narrative restrains our experience of the world which is concerning because it limits one’s knowledge of reality. These single stories lead to stereotyping and hasty generalizations, often resulting in ignorant world views which is the main idea behind Adichie’s overall view. In her speech, Adichie states, “I wrote exactly the kinds of stories I was reading: All my characters were white and blue-eyed, they played in the snow, and they ate apples”. Due to her limited exposure to literature, all of her stories had similar storylines and characteristics which narrowed her potential to write about other places and people. I can relate to Adichie since people in my community often ask me: “Are you Indian?” assuming that people with brown skin are all from India. However, I am Sri Lankan, which is an entirely different country. Therefore, from my personal experience, it is evident that the stereotypes that derive from single narratives limits one’s knowledge. Being narrow-minded is what makes people less aware of their surroundings and results in social isolation as people fail to understand others with different perspectives. If society was able to examine single narratives from various perspectives, acceptance would increase resulting in compassion and genuine inclusivity. To conclude, single stories lead to assumptions which may result in societal issues causing more harm than good, thus emphasizing the importance of being aware of tokenization and fallacy based
