From the 16th century until the 19th century an exchange of humans was occurring in the Atlantic Ocean; an estimated 12 million African Americans were brought to the Americas under extremely harsh conditions. The exchange of human beings was largely known as the slave trade. The slave trade created a huge impact on numerous individuals and societies both positively and negatively. However, the abolition of the slave trade also transformed the world. The film, Amazing Grace, depicts many aspects of the slave trade as well as the abolition of slavery. Not only was Amazing Grace a great film, it stayed true to the facts. The film consists of many features that are historically accurate to the slave trade. The characters of Amazing Grace, such as William Wilberforce, Thomas Clarkson, John Newton, and Olaudah Equiano, are accurately portrayed in the film for the duties they occupied during the period of the slave trade. William Wilberforce can be seen as a hero in the film and in history; he was an English member of parliament and was a very powerful leader of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire. Thomas Clarkson was also an abolitionist and had a huge influence on Wilberforce, which is seen throughout the film. John Newton was a former slave ship master who turned to the church to repent of his sins for participating in the slave trade. As seen in the film, Newton influenced Wilberforce greatly to fight for the end of slavery because he knew it was the
