Dewey’s vision for education could not be any farther from the truth of how today’s school systems operate. Instead of focusing on students’ aptitudes and expanding on them, the Board of Education confines everyone into a box. Any person who doesn’t fit into that box, doesn’t excel in standardized testing, doesn’t have the chance to succeed in life. As Dewey said, “The notion that the essentials of elementary education are the three Rs mechanically treated, is based upon ignorance of the essentials needed for realization of democratic ideals.” Students lose themselves once they reach high school, cemented in the same pattern of just trying to get the work done, never actually enjoying learning.
Later High school start time are linked to academic performance. According to Sifferlin,in When Sleep and School Don’t Mix, the school has seen so many improvements among student since it required them to be at school start later. The percentage of late students dropped around 3% from the 2011-2012 school year to to the 2013-2014 school year. The number of student falling classes dropped 2.2% and the absentee rate dropped 1.5%.This reveals that kids were arriving on time and the number of student falling classes decreased at least by 2 percent. The Game of School: Why We All Play It, How It Hurts Kids, and What It Will Take to Change It by Robert L. Fried is a great tool for identifying challenges in school systems and planning school reform. This book explains in great depth the problems faced by students and educators in schools today and ends with a call to action for solving these problems. Some major concepts that arise frequently throughout the book are time being wasted, students feeling powerless and the prioritization of test scores over authentic learning. Time is wasted by everyone in school and is wasted in various ways, for example students are given busy work and teachers rush through a curriculum while students learn nothing. Students, while they are the most important stakeholders, feel as though they have no control over their education.
There are many aspects of society that can be compared when doing an analysis of three cultures: socio-economic statuses, occupations, fertility rates, diets, religions, economics, and politics are few among many. Education, and particularly early childhood education, is a fascinating topic to study when conducting a comparison because it has elements of all traits and greatly mirrors the values of the culture of that which it is present, “Preschools are sites where a variety of domains, interests, and social actors intersect. Preschool is where child rearing meets education; where the world of parents and home first meets the world of teachers and school” (Tobin, Hsueh, & Karasawa, 2009, p. 2). Schoolies week is a festival held on the Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise for year 12 students who have just finished school. The schoolies organisation host different events such as the beach party, the glow party and the movie night. There is a large amount of controversy about weather schoolies week should still be going or not. There are a lot of issues involved with schoolies such as underage drinking, drug use, unsafe sex, injury and sometimes death. 1,500 teenagers attending Schoolies on the Gold Coast are surveyed each year by Drug Arm Australia.
Two of these concepts I find very evident in my chosen curriculum document. These two concepts are Scope and sequence, and standards. Posner (2003) defines scope and sequence as, “a document listing the intended learning outcomes in each grade level, thereby giving the sequence of the curriculum; the outcomes are grouped according to topic, theme or dimension, thereby giving the scope of the curriculum” (p.6). The Kindergarten science pacing guide for the Kansas City Kansas School district is mapped out to look like the elements of scope and sequence. It gives teachers an outline of what order topics should be taught in and when they should be taught by.
I fact some of these curricula have scripts and pacing guide to what has been taught. According to the same source 60 to 110 hours are spent specifically on testing instruction. Traditional classroom planning allowed teachers to develop curriculum that catered to the needs of their class. In 1954 students in schools started integrating to other schools, before this big event, kids were put in separate schools. This was due to their race. R.V. Cassil wrote the book, The First Day of School which revolves around two members of a family (brother and sister) that are forced to go to an all white school. The book starts off with John messing with his bowl of cereal, while talking to his mother about why his sister, Audrey, is not down stairs yet.

A good number of adolescents are lacking sleep and are performing poorly both academically and physically. As a result, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is pushing educational policymakers to make middle and high schools start later in the morning (Richmond). Students show up to class seriously lacking sleep and the early start times cause them to have to wake up at hours that contradict their internal clocks, which are rhythms that determine sleep patterns. Less than half of the 10th graders get even seven hours of sleep, which is already less than the recommended hours of sleep for an adolescent (Richmond). Even if teenagers go to bed earlier, their school start times are becoming more early as they advance through grades
In 1954, the United States Supreme Court made a life-changing decision to integrate schools across the United States. Before this, people of a different race were not allowed to be in the same school, or even drink from the same water fountain. R.V. Cassill lived through this change, therefore he wrote, The First Day of School. A story about an African-American family recruited to be the first six black children to go to Joseph P. Gilmore High, an entirely white school. R.V. Cassill develops John’s character through John 's nervousness at the thought of having to go to the school, his anger at his mother, and his calmness when he was actually going to the school.
The first day of middle school for me was both terrifying and exciting. I made a lot of new friends within the year. I remember the first day very well. I had woke up at 5;30 a.m. I was extremely tired.

It is, therefore, important to design a pilot curriculum that ensures proper evaluation of the content, teaching materials as well as teaching methods involved in the changed curriculum (McKinn, 2008). The pilot curriculum also serves as an assessment tool for acceptance of the curriculum by the faculty and students.

Mathematics also enables students to search for simple connections, patterns, structures and rules whilst describing and investigating strategies. Geometry is important as Booker, Bond, Sparrow and Swan (2010, p. 394) foresee as it allows children the prospect to engage in geometry through enquiring and investigation whilst enhancing mathematical thinking, this thinking encourages students to form connections with other key areas associated with mathematics and builds upon students abilities helping students reflect
My first day of high school as a freshmen in a new level of education Is what I was thinking when I woke from slumber that morning in bed. Stepping foot on the campus wasn’t even the beginning, taking the school bus in the morning is where the first taste of being a freshmen and actually starting and being an high school student. I started to get really nervous and a sense of reality hit me. Walking towards the bus stop all I see is a huge group of high school students waiting around for the bus, calm and cool as I try to stay to be I approach the waiting area not knowing what to I’m getting into.
