In “The Flight from Conversation,” Sherry Turkle discusses the advancement of technology on communication in the world. Technology is great for staying in contact with old friends and keeping up to date with people’s lives, but it has been replacing human interactions. Turkle explains how "conversation is being sacrificed for communication because of social media." Today people expect more from technology and less from each other for the impression of companionship without the physical interaction.
Sherry Turkle has had more than 15 years of research about the way people connect through technology. With her background in science and technology, she is able to study how communication has changed and have various books published throughout the years. Turkle offers a unique perspective on technology and social interaction. In this writing, she focuses on how people have forgotten how to have an actual conversation, “we have sacrificed conversation for mere connection.” We have learned how to make eye contact with someone while texting at the same time. Hiding behind a screen is now preferable to facing reality, it shows how the new gadgets have changed not only what we do, but who we are. We should put down these devices and actually take in our surroundings and have a better relationship with others and ourselves.
